Let’s face it, Filipinos love eating a wide variety of charcoal grilled delights, be it pork bits, fish, liver and of course chicken. Barbecued or grilled roast chicken is a ridiculously common sight for when eating out, with eateries and restaurants that offer tasty cooked fowl being a dime a dozen on near every city and town in the country. There comes a time however when you just have an urge to try something that tastes new and different, but is still very familiar to the eyes. Look no further then, than the highly recommended Peri Peri Charcoal Chicken franchise, which has opened a branch over at the SM Megamall. That’s some awesome dining of chicken and other treats in one of the most happening places to be in Metro Manila.
Peri Peri Charcoal Chicken is located at the third floor Bridgeway of SM Megamall. Peri Peri Charcoal Chicken is definitely a hit with the masses and food lovers. After all, the concept that Peri Peri is going for in their signature chicken stands out a lot from the general “grilled chicken” crowd. Their main draw is the use of Bird’s eye chili or “peri peri”, a chili pepper that is common in parts of Africa and Southeast Asia, in all their special customized sauces. The idea of a new way to enjoy spit-fired grilled chicken by marinating them with imported African-Portuguese spice mixes and peri peri sauces is the inspired brainchild of I-Foods Inc. which owns other restaurant chains such as Kogi Bulgogi and Tokyo Café. For more added star power, the Megamall branch which opened in 2015 is franchised to none other than Philippine matinee idol and Celebrity Athlete Enchong Dee with Franchise Magnate Dominic Hernandez as his business partner.
The first time I tried Peri Peri Chicken was when I was in Scotland and every time I’m in Singapore I would definitely in a Peri Peri Resto. Just what is it that makes their signature offering something unique among other examples of grilled chicken? For one, it’s got to be the eye catching presentation. Have you ever seen a “flattened” whole chicken before? That there’s the “Todo” selection of Peri Peri’s main plates, and what a scrumptious sight it is. It’s all crispy golden brown with seared grill marks, served with their hot and spicy peri peri sauce. One serving of it is fit for four diners. The upgraded “Rio” plate even throws in four different side dishes (coleslaw, tortillas and so on) to enjoy with the chicken. Of course, for pairs or solo eaters there are the smaller portions of their signature dish, served in “Quatro” (1/4 chicken, “Bahia” with one side and “Palmas” with two), and “Metade” (half chicken, “Brasilia” with one side dish and “Sao Paolo” with two).
Still, if the idea of consuming nothing but chicken is a tad appalling for the health nut in you, Peri Peri Charcoal Chicken also offers their “Healthy Meal” option, in three variants – a Peri Peri chicken wing plus salad, and your choice of quesadilla, rappa or tortillas with salsa dip. Never let it be said that they don’t care about your well-being.
Now, Peri Peri Charcoal Chicken has a far more extensive menu than just fowl. Vegan patrons won’t be left behind with their House Salad and Peri Peri Chicken Salad that they can share with the meat-lovers. They’ve also got two flavors of delicious soup, burger and choripan on the menu. Their appetizers run the gamut from Jalapeno fries and mozzarella sticks, to crispy baby squids and sizzling chorizo and mushroom, to Peri Peri Wild Wings and Grilled Chicken Fillet with Beef Salpicao. Just typing these words are making me hungry with the memories.
Once you gotten your morsels of choice in your gullet, you’re going to need something to wash down your throat. And Peri Peri Charcoal Chicken does not disappoint in this regard. They’ve got their own selection of Cocktails: margaritas, mojitos and daiquiris of one flavor or other; or you could just toss back a cold beer if you want things simple. For younger age groups they also have milkshakes galore (with a boozed variation too), plus no less than five flavors of smoothies, and your choice of soft drinks, coffee, tea and plain old water. In addition, they have a P69 all-you-can-drink rate per head, so you can keep the refills coming.
Open to serve all comers from 10 in the morning to 10 at night, SM Megamall’s Peri Peri Charcoal Chicken is a nicely ambient quality family dining experience like no other chicken restaurant you can compare it with. They even offer home delivery if you prefer it that way. At the time Enchong Dee’s Peri Peri franchise opened, iFoods Inc. has already begun gearing for the chain’s international expansion. Just one taste of their chicken with the peri peri sauce and you’ll think it’s already a global brand. Peri Peri Charcoal Chicken now has a branch in UP Town and few more branches opening soon.
