Scottish writer Mark Millar is one of the biggest names in the comic book industry. Aside from his work on telling exciting storylines about some of the most prominent superheroes on both Marvel and DC Comics, he also has penned a number of impressive, if edgy, original works on his creator-owned Millarworld publishing label. Titles like “Kick-Ass”, “Wanted” and “Kingsman: The Secret Service” come to mind, all of which have been adapted into adrenaline pumping action movies in the past. This caught the attention of Netflix which acquired Millarworld last year. Now the streaming giant is ready to preview what they have developed based on the works of Mark Millar.

Polygon has it that Netflix made a huge announcement on Tuesday, July 17, regarding a slew of new content to be developed for streaming on their platform, based on stories published on Mark Millar’s Millarworld. The streaming service outlined no less than two series and three feature-length films. The first includes shows like “Jupiter’s Legacy”, about the present-day descendants of the world’s first superheroes that appeared in the 1930s, and the controversy-inviting “American Jesus” which tells the story of a 12-year-old boy who suddenly discovers he has all the powers of Jesus Christ, and might possibly be his second incarnation.

In case of the three movies, Netflix has revealed details on “Empress”, about the runaway consort of a monstrous galactic tyrant trying to flee his grasp with her children. Next is “Huck” which concerns a man with special powers who secretly help people, until some unwanted public attention on what he can do spurs him to go on the run. Finally, there is the quirky sci-fi adventure “Sharkey the Bounty Hunter” about the titular bounty hunter and his child sidekick as they track their various targets across space while piloting a rocket-powered ice cream truck.

Mark Millar gave a statement regarding how well Netflix has been doing in handling Millarworld’s various properties in adapting them for streaming media, of which he and his wife and collaborator Lucy are heavily involved in the creative process. “To see a movie based on your work every couple of years is incredibly exciting,” Millar said. “But to see them all happening at once like this and with talent this high-end is just off the scale.” Millar expressed his hope that with Netflix’s help, Millarworld might become a cinematic universe akin to Marvel and DC.
