The 2015 film “Creed” from MGM was a delightful surprise to fans of the storied “Rocky” sports film franchise, in that it was able to both continue a story that we thought was definitively ended by “Rocky Balboa” in 2006 and revitalize Sylvester Stallone’s iconic character by shifting Rocky from active boxer to mentor. That also paved way for the introduction of the new viewpoint slugger in Adonis Creed, played by Michael B. Jordan who was recently in the MCU’s “Black Panther” in February. But now the story of Creed is back on track with a sequel, and a trailer.
Indeed, a new trailer has come for “Creed 2” which will release next month as Polygon tells it. Michael B. Jordan and Sylvester Stallone are back for another epic encounter on the boxing ring, one that will have connections to the pasts of all involved. The sequel is being directed this time by Steven Caple Jr., with “Creed” director Ryan Coogler instead standing as executive producers due to having been busy at the helm of “Black Panther”. Also joining Stallone in reprising a role from the “Rocky” movies is Dolph Lundgren as Ivan Drago, as his son is positioned as a new opponent for Adonis.
Scenes from the trailer depict “Donnie” Creed trying his best to both provide for his family – girlfriend Bianca (Tessa Thompson) and their child – as well as prepare himself for future fights as a pro boxer. His next new challenge comes in the form of Viktor Drago, portrayed by German-Romanian boxer-actor Florian Munteanu, following the tradition set by the first “Creed” of having the antagonist fighter being a real-life boxer. Viktor’s flashes of appearance in the trailer give off an air of impending menace and mystery, establishing him as an intimidating opponent but revealing little else.
Conflict arises from Donnie and Rocky’s opposing reactions to having to face Viktor, who has his father Ivan on his corner. Rocky is concerned due to recalling how Donnie’s father Apollo was killed in the ring by the elder Drago, a sentiment shared by Bianca and Mary Anne Creed (Phylicia Rashad), Apollo’s widow and Donnie’s adoptive mother. Donnie on the other hand feels he must answer the challenge, though he cannot seem to make up his mind on his reason.
“Creed 2” also stars Wood Harris, Milo Ventimiglia, Andre Ward and Bridgette Nielsen, also reprising her “Rocky IV” role as Ivan’s wife and now Viktor’s mother. The film is due to premiere on the day before Thanksgiving this November 21.
