“Mama, just learned the news
The Queen movie’s coming back
As a sing-along, that’s a fact…”
Poor lyric paraphrasing aside, there is some good news coming for fans of British rock band Queen, and those moviegoers who got a total kick out of watching 20th Century Fox’s biopic for Queen and its front-man Freddie Mercury, “Bohemian Rhapsody” since October of last year. It has been reiterated how many time now, that despite mediocre critic reviews and some well-documented twisting of historical fact for narrative drama, the film was a box office smash. And it is indeed coming back this year, in a limited form, as a sing-along.
Rolling Stone tells us that the producers of “Bohemian Rhapsody” starring Rami Malek (the only good part of the movie according to critics) have decided to do a limited-time re-release of the film in North America starting this Friday, January 11. Some 550 cinemas in the US and Canada will show “Bohemian Rhapsody” once more “as is”. But for 750 locations in the same region, they will get an extra treat. This is a sing-along version of the movie that has light-up karaoke lyrics for all the scenes where the characters are performing.
Apparently 20th Century Fox got the idea for a “Bohemian Rhapsody” sing-along version from when the film was running in South Korea as of November 2018. Moviegoers there who watched the Korean-subtitled movie were pleased to see that all song numbers had English subtitles for the lyrics instead, inspiring them to sing along in their theater seats. The English lyric subs were the idea of Fox’s Korean distribution arm, and were positively received by fans. The studio’s stateside HQ has taken note of this phenomenon and decided to test it out back in North America.
“Bohemian Rhapsody” the film is a remarkable story of a production that overcame problems behind the scenes (especially with its initial director Bryan Singer), and of course harsh critic reviews to eventually win over movie audiences to become the biggest musical biopic of all time worldwide. Its latest triumphs happened this week at the 76th Golden Globe Awards, with a win for Best Drama Film and another for Best Film Actor – Drama with Rami Malek for his role as Freddie. Online ticketing company Fandango has a database on all cinemas that will carry “Bohemian Rhapsody” in its musical re-release. Interested moviegoers need only type their ZIP code at the Fandango website to find the closest screening location to their homes.
