It is the middle of the year and not quite the time for the major media awards just yet, but one can always expect a ceremony from those that are a tier below at any time. For instance, this Monday, June 17, MTV had its Movie and TV Awards for the year 2019, on a two-day delay after it was taped at the Barker Hangar on Santa Monica last Saturday, June 15. This is only the third awards ceremony by MTV to honor what it has judged the best in both film and television, similar to the Golden Globes but for more “out there” categories.
And according to The Hollywood Reporter the expected big-name heavy hitters of the big and small screens over the past few months were the big winners for this year’s MTV Movie and TV Awards. On the cinematic side there was no wonder at all when Marvel’s “Avengers: Endgame” got named Best Movie, and it would be just one of four categories where the epic conclusion to the first decade of the MCU franchise got nominations, three of which were won. It seemed natural that the Best Hero and Villain awards would go to Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man and Josh Brolin’s Thanos in that regard.
For the TV camp, HBO’s now-concluded cash cow “Game of Thrones” has gotten its first media awards of note. The medieval fantasy’s eighth and final season was the Best Show counterpart of “Endgame,” and similarly it had four nominations too. Unfortunately it managed only that one victory as vindication from MTV for the last six episodes that have been less well-received by longtime fans. The rest of the winners are one-offs from their respective shows and movies, like Brie Larson vs. Gemma Chan (“Captain Marvel”) prevailing as Best Fight over Maisie Williams’ Arya Stark killer moment from “Game of Thrones.”
Nominees for the 2019 MTV Movie and TV Awards were announced last May 14, although on May 29 one name in the form of rapper Jason Mitchell was removed (nominated Best Performance in Show for “The Chi”) owing to recent reports of his very unprofessional misconduct. Variety also reports that special MTV awards were also given out to Dwayne Johnson (Generation Award, for lifetime achievement) and Jada Pinkett Smith (Trailblazer Award, for game-changing pioneer career).
Zachary Levi served as host for the awards night, he himself being nominated for Best Comedic Performance and Best Hero (losing respectively to Dan Levy and RDJ). Category presenters included Gal Gadot, Shameik Moore and Tessa Thompson among many others.
