DC Comics has its Superman, the face of its label and the definitive evil-beating superhero who also rescues from disaster. Their longtime rival Marvel does not traditionally go for such paragon characters, preferring heroes that are also so human that they risk failing and ruining their lives in doing the right thing. Still Marvel, or rather Marvel Studios, sees the need for a super among its hero stable to be the face of the MCU, and they chose Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel, as portrayed by Brie Larson on her first solo film last 2019. Almost a year later, her sequel has been officially announced.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the plans are in place to begin development of “Captain Marvel 2,” the direct sequel to the initial film from last year introducing the eponymous character, real name Carol Danvers (Brie Larson). Enough conceptualizing has been done for inside sources to reveal that the timeframe of the follow-up will shift from the original’s 1990s to the present-day setting of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As the writing-directing team of Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck was reportedly not able return for the sequel, Marvel Studios is getting a new writer somewhere else.
That would be from the production teams of the official MCU tie-in series that are set to stream exclusively on Disney+. In particular, negotiations are now under way for Megan McDonnell to take over writing duties for “Captain Marvel 2.” McDonnell is a staff writer for “WandaVision,” the Disney+ MCU show starring Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany as Avengers Wanda Maximoff and Vision. Talks between the studio and McDonnell are said to be completed with the writer likely to accept.
It is not yet known if McDonnell will be getting any help in screenwriting the “Captain Marvel” sequel, seeing as the 2019 movie had a whole team in Ryan Fleck, Anna Boden, Nicole Perlman, Meg LeFauve and Geneva Robertson-Dworet. It is also not known if any of the original main cast aside from Brie Larson are set to reprise any roles, though at the very least one of the supporting cast, Monica Rambeau (Akira Akbar) could be played as an adult if she should appear, possibly played by Teyonah Parris, who is cast as Monica for “WandaVision” which McDonnell is writing for. As for Boden and Fleck, it is reported that they might also be tapped for another Disney+ MCU series sometime in the future.
“Captain Marvel 2” has been given the release date of the year 2022. It is not clear if it will be part of Phase 4, which starts this year with “Black Widow” coming this May.
