Filipinos are quite familiar with seeing dance troupes being developed further into ensemble talent groups that are able to sing (and thus record songs) or even act in film and television. They have seen this happen to some success with the Universal Motion Dancers of the 1990s and the SexBomb Girls in the 21st Century. This can be seen overseas as well, with the Pussycat Dolls transitioning from being a burlesque troupe to a sexy pop girl band, or less generously “singer Nicole Scherzinger and backup dancers” by the time the team split up in 2010. But a successful reunion has now led to them taking a surprise concert tour.

The Manila Bulletin has it that the Pussycat Dolls – Nicole Scherzinger, Ashley Roberts, Carmit Bachar, Kimberly Wyatt and Jessica Sutta – are going back in the touring saddle following their reunion performance on “The X Factor: Celebrity,” the UK version on ITV in November last year. They are head straight for the Philippines in what will be their second concert in the country after a decade and one year away. That was in 2009 or a year before the roster disbanded.

Such a comeback is both a boon for fans of the Pussycat Dolls and a play on the “native-son” (or make that daughter) appeal concerning Scherzinger’s return to the Philippines in a performing capacity. Despite the German surname she adopted from her stepfather, Nicole’s birth father was a Hawaiian resident of Filipino descent; and Filipinos have always been welcoming of foreign talents and celebrities with local-originating parentage (such as “Independence Day” film producer Dean Devlin, who has a Filipina mother).

The Pussycat Dolls comeback concert here in the Philippines will be held this coming May 8 at the SM Mall of Asia Arena. Top concert organizer Wilbros Live is again behind the wheel for getting a recognizable international act to perform in Manila. Tickets will be made available via SM Tickets beginning on February 29. It is very likely that one the songs the girls will perform during this concert is “React,” their surprise comeback single that they briefly previewed for audiences during their reunion song and dance at “The X Factor UK” last year.
