It has been two months since it finished airing as one of the earliest original series on Disney+ streaming, but viewers and critics are still gushing over “The Mandalorian,” a spinoff show to the “Star Wars” franchise taking place between the Original and Sequel trilogies, the latter of which also concluded in December last year. The concept of the series, as a space-opera take on the Japanese samurai franchise “Lone Wolf and Cub,” was so positively received that a second season was obviously green-lit. Also praised was the ensemble of directors that worked on individual episodes, and it looks like that staple will not just carry over, but grow bigger.

According to Comic Book Resources, Lucasfilm and Disney are contacting directors from film and television to interest in taking on at least one episode of the upcoming season 2 for “The Mandalorian” on Disney+. The selection of directors from the debut season was awesome, but it looks like the producers are going to try and top that. Two of the directors reached for “Mandalorian” season 2 are none other than James Mangold and Robert Rodriguez. One has directed a Marvel movie; the other is a known collaborator of Quentin Tarantino.

But then, additional details regarding their involvement would have it that Mangold and Rodriguez are not actually directing a whole “Mandalorian” episode. Rather, they were only taking turns overseeing particular scenes and action sequences. And yes, they are all part of a single season-2 episode. It does not sound much, but it is something to have two filmmakers who have been big on entertainment news for the past two years. Mangold directed the Fox “X-Men” spinoff “Logan,” swan song to Hugh Jackman’s role as Wolverine, while Rodriguez’ direction helped realize producer James Cameron’s lifelong dream to adapt famous manga-anime “Alita: Battle Angel,” also by Fox.

In terms of directors returning from the first season of “The Mandalorian,” it has been confirmed that Bryce Dallas Howard will indeed give it another spin for an episode. Show-runner Jon Favreau has certainly managed to run a tight ship in the production of this “Star Wars” live-action spinoff, detailing the adventures of the titular bounty hunter from planet Mandalore, and his mission to transport a mysterious baby of the same species as the late ancient Jedi Master Yoda, while being pursued by other mercenaries. “The Mandalorian” season 2 premieres on October 2020 on Disney+.
