In early 2019, fans of the 1988 comedy film “Coming to America” starring Eddie Murphy and Arsenio Hall were surprised to learn that Paramount Pictures was working on a decades-distant sequel with the main cast reprising their roles. “Coming 2 America” would follow Murphy’s Prince-turned-King Akeem of Zamunda returning to America to find and bring back a son he never knew and prepare him as his heir, as his own child, a daughter, was ineligible to inherit. After its 2020 premiere was scrapped, Paramount gave the film to Amazon Prime Video for streaming release next month. Following an initial trailer last December 2020, a more substantial preview has come out.

Comic Book Resources has it that Prime Video has released a second trailer for Paramount Pictures’ “Coming 2 America,” which will arrive on their streaming service this March. Where the previous teaser was primarily a cast list, here some bits of the overall storyline finally get some spotlight. Akeem Joffer (Eddie Murphy) and his right-hand man Semmi (Arsenio Hall) return to America to find the former’s alleged son, whom Akeem must recognize as heir now that he is King of Zamunda. Said son is Lavelle (Jermaine Fowler), a street-smart youth who is not impressed by the reveal of his royalty.

Then again, with him and his mother Mary (Leslie Jones) being hard up in life, all it takes is some money to convince Lavelle to accept Akeem as his dad and shoot for being an African prince. They all return to Zamunda, where awkwardness ensues between Lavelle, his mom and Uncle (Tracy Morgan), and Akeem’s Queen Lisa (Shari Headley) and their daughter Princess Meeka (Kiki Layne). Meeka aspires to be a good heir but is disqualified by Zamunda’s gender-biased inheritance laws, something Lisa is not happy with. But the last wish of Akeem’s father (James Earl Jones) must be followed.

Complicating matters is the machinations of Zamunda’s neighbor Nextdoria, led by General Izzi (Wesley Snipes). Izzi is the older brother of Akeem’s former fiancée Imani, whom Akeem turned down before his original trip to America where he found his true love. The General however is still keen to see their two countries unified, by any means necessary. So the issue between lawful and good regarding Akeem’s rightful heir must be resolved before trouble breaks out. Oh, and the trailer takes some shots at Wakanda, while the big funny moment must be Lavelle undergoing ceremonial circumcision.

Paramount Pictures’ “Coming 2 America” will be available exclusively on Prime Video beginning March 5.
