Notable Nominees and Records for 93rd ACADEMY AWARDS this APRIL 25

Given that the 93rd edition of the Academy Awards, which will give kudos to the best output of the hobbled Hollywood motion picture industry during the pandemic-plagued year of 2020, will be taking place late next month, it would be a prime time to know who and what will be nominated for the award categories. Thanks to Nick Jonas and his wife Priyanka Chopra, the world was informed via global live-stream of the nominees this past Monday, March 15. All in all, it was a repeat of the trend that formed from the already-presented Golden Globes. Some records, for both the current awards and all-time Oscar history, were also set.

Entertainment Weekly has a good lowdown on the list of nominees for this year’s Oscars, and the milestones achieved both in this edition of the awards and as a whole for the Academy. For instance, one film set the record for the most nominations in the 23 running categories this 2021. That would be Netflix’s biopic “Mank” about early 20th Century screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz (Gary Oldman) and his phenomenal work on “Citizen Kane.” Best Picture, Director, Actor, Supporting Actress and several technical awards are in the running for “Mank.”

It says a lot about “Mank” and its 10 nominations when the next-highest amount is six, shared also by six movies. One of them, “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” has the honor of including among its nominations that of Viola Davis’ as Best Actress. The Academy Awards have nominated the 55-year-old actress three times before. This now makes her the most-nominated African-American actress of all time at the Oscars. The fact that “Ma Rainey’s” also has a Best Actor nom for the late Chadwick Boseman only makes a strong case for victory with this other Netflix movie, again cementing the streaming giant as a cinematic force.

Also mirroring the choices made for the 78th Golden Globe Awards are the Best Picture nomination for “Nomadland,” plus the Best Director nom for filmmaker Chloe Zhao. She has already become the second woman (and first Asian woman) to win the Golden Globes Best Director, and she stands a solid chance of repeating the feat with the Academy. Asian representation also has another point in these Oscars after Steven Yeun got a Best Actor nom and Youn Yuh-jung the Best Supporting Actress one for “Minari.” Speaking of which, that too is a Best Picture nominee.

Disney-Pixar might have the Best Animated Feature Film down with the Disney+ release of “Soul” starring Jamie Foxx. That is in spite of solo Disney also having the animated movie “Onward” (Tom Holland and Chris Pratt) from earlier in 2020. We will just have to see which nominees triumph when the 93rd Academy Awards kick off jointly at Los Angeles Union Station and the Dolby Theater this coming April 25.
