Over two years ago, Paramount Pictures released their big-screen live-action/CG adaptation of classic Sega videogame franchise “Sonic the Hedgehog.” Taking the time to redesign the titular main character after a poor reception in the first trailer led to their movie making serious money in 2020 before the pandemic exploded. Over a month ago, or close to the anniversary of the “Sonic” premiere, Paramount confirmed the sequel and its scheduled release for 2022. The teaser’s use of the background music for the Sega Genesis videogame “Sonic the Hedgehog 2” was inspired and positively praised by fans. They have more to enjoy now that production for “Sonic the Hedgehog 2” has begun.
According to Comic Book Resources, filming for Paramount Pictures’ “Sonic the Hedgehog 2” started just this Monday, March 15. It was confirmed by the director, Jeff Fowler, on his Twitter page which featured a set chair with the film logo on its back, as revealed last February 10. But before that, on December 2020 the BC Film Commission in British Columbia, Canada has already filed that the production of “Sonic 2” will run from March 15 to May 10. At least the starting date was real. The BCFC listed the project under its working title “Emerald Hill,” the same name as the teaser’s game music.
Even before the first “Sonic” movie premiered last year actor Jim Carrey, who portrayed the antagonist Dr. Robotnik had already expressed interest in reprising his role in a sequel. By May 2020, Paramount was okay with the idea and gradually the original production crew and cast have reunited for the next film, with planned shooting locations in Vancouver, BC (as in the original movie) and Hawaii. The story will again be written by the tandem of Josh Miller and Pat Casey, and directed by Fowler.
While guesswork for the plot of “Sonic the Hedgehog 2” is not really that difficult – merely the return of Carrey’s Dr. Robotnik/Eggman for revenge following his first defeat – it is also known that it will focus on the sidekick of Sonic (Ben Schwarz), the two-tailed flying fox nicknamed Tails. The character already appeared in the previous film’s post-credit scene, so it is only natural for the sequel to follow up. “Sonic 2” is expected to release on April 8, 2022.
