Earlier this year, streaming giant Netflix announced its plans to create a TV series spinning off from “The Addams Family,” which was adapted from comics into various TV series and then films. “Wednesday” would focus on the titular daughter of the macabre Addamses, who as a young adult enters Nevermore Academy to navigate university life, a murder spree happening nearby, and the development of her own psychic powers. Having Tim Burton direct is already a bonus, but one other major factor would be who will be cast as Wednesday Addams and her relatives. The answer came in May, and over the past week the Addams parents have been cast too.

Variety tells us that the roles of the Addams parents have finally been decided for Netflix’s “Wednesday” series, produced by show-runners Alfred Gough and Miles Millar. Last week, veteran Puerto Rican actor Luis Guzman has been tapped to play the role of Gomez Addams, while this past Sunday, August 8, Catherine Zeta-Jones in turn was cast to portray Morticia Addams. The two of them will join Jenna Ortega who stars as their daughter, the titular “Wednesday” Addams, as announced way back in May this year.

The choices to portray the parents of Wednesday are among some of the seasoned stars in Hollywood for decades. Guzman was in 1997’s “Boogie Nights” and 2000 crime drama “Traffic,” both of which got nods at the Screen Actors Guild Awards (the latter winning Outstanding Performance by Cast in Motion Picture). He also has been in Netflix’s “Narcos” in 2015. Zeta-Jones of course is memorable in 1998’s “The Mask of Zorro” and 2004’s “Ocean’s Twelve.” They serve as experienced acting counterparts to Ortega, who has been prominent in voice roles from Disney Channel’s “Elena of Avalor” and more recently in Netflix’s “Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous.”

Despite being billed more as guest roles, having the parents of the Addams Family figures into the plot of “Wednesday,” as the Addams daughter’s investigation of mysteries in Nevermore Academy leads her to discover a secret about Gomez and Morticia that both have hidden for years. Before the announcement of Catherine Zeta-Jones, a foremost front-running candidate to play Morticia Addams was Christina Ricci, who played Wednesday in the 1990s films. Netflix has yet to reveal when the series will premiere.
